Carnac Megaliths

South west of Vannes on the Golfe du Morbihan in the Bay of Biscay are fields of giant stones or "menhirs".

There are more than 3000 of these stones, some up to 4m high and weighing 40 tonnes and aligned in perfectly straight rows.

They are thought to date back to prehistoric times, around 4500BC.

Historians think that the stones represented sacred burial sites or ceremonial places and the outline is thought to indicate the area of an ancient Neolithic temple.
